About Snead Research Laboratory

Snead Research Laboratory was chartered in 1979 by E.B. and Ned Snead as the project development arm of Georgetown Railroad, founded by E.B. Snead in 1958. The railroad originated as a transportation segment of Texas Crushed Stone Company, founded by E.B. in 1947 and joined by Ned in 1953, following Ned’s stint in the service overseas as a lieutenant after garnering a BS-ME at Texas A&M in 1951. Ned then designed and built a new, modernized operation and was promoted to president of Texas Crushed Stone in 1958.

Ned Snead went on to found Snead Management Systems in 1968, a pioneer in business software development for the construction industry. In 1972, Ned started Kilo-Wate, Inc., marketing a computerized conveyor weighing system he developed for crushed stone, which branched into material and rolling stock weighing systems worldwide. An avid flyer and boat builder, his experimental watercraft led to involvement with the World Sailing Speed Record Committee and speed trials racing at Buchanan Yacht Club, which Ned started in 1982.

In 1993, Ned founded Georgetown Rail Equipment Company (GREX) based on his patents. GREX now designs and builds cutting-edge service, safety and utility railroad systems and self-propelled rail equipment. The SPS (Self-Powered Slot), Dump Train, Slot Machine and Hydra Dump are outstanding performers, along with new developments including Solaris, G-Power, Aurora and GateSync.

Along with his business accomplishments, Ned Snead has been awarded twenty-five patents and has written numerous books & essays.
